Course Name: Homiletics: “Learning to Present the Gospel Message Effectively”

Course Description:  This is a course on the principles of preaching and teaching the Word of God. The student will learn the importance of preparing to address a class or congregation with exhortations, lessons and sermons for the purpose of edifying the Body of Christ.  Several proven preparation methods will be explored and each student will have the opportunity to present their prepared lesson to the class, as well as “student-teach” in one of the many church ministries.

Credits: 3 credit hours (1 credit hour for 3 hours of classroom instruction)

  1. Mandatory class attendance: 9 hours of instruction time
  2. Read required text(s), complete and turn in attached study guide   (20% of grade)
  3. Written assignment: 1 ½ – 2 typed pages/single spaced  (30% of grade)
  4. Overall summary of reading material (3 or more main ideas)
  5. Scripturally documented/supported
  6. Reflection: How will you apply what you have learned?
  7. Critique: What do you think about it (reading material)?
  8. 1 ½ – 2 typed pages, single spaced
  9. Written exam – final day    (50 % of grade)
    1. variety of questions: true/false, multiple choice, matching, short answer, etc.
    2. working knowledge of 8–10 important scripture verses (on back of syllabus)
    3. ratio of questions: 75 % from reading materials and 25 % from lectures
